"The Shocking Story of What Happened in the Mansion Called Altona!" (US movie poster) THE CONDEMNED OF ALTONA (I sequestrati di Altona) is an Italian-French film directed by Vittorio De Sica, based on the play of the same name by Jean-Paul Sartre. It was produced by Carlo Ponti, and stars Sophia Loren, Maximilian Schell, Fredric March, Robert Wagner and Françoise Prévost. Albrecht von Gerlach (March), the dying owner of one of Germany's biggest industrial firms, calls on his son Werner (Wagner), a lawyer married to an actress (Loren), to take over the family business that helped build the Nazi war machine. Werner's older brother Franz (Schell) ran the company during the war and, cited for war crimes, was executed, or so everyone believes. In fact, Franz escaped the gallows, and now lives in the attic of the family's Altona estate, watched over by his sister Leni (Prévost). This 1962 Titanus release was written by Cesare Zavattini and Abby Mann, and was photographed by Roberto Gerardi. The musical score was adapted by Franco Ferrara from several works by Russian composer DImitri Shostakovich. Among the honors the film received was Italy's David di Donatello Award to De Sica as best director of the year. THE CONDEMNED OF ALTONA is not currently available on DVD.
